Valentine's Day is on the way; love is in the air. With that in mind, LOOK at this picture by Romare Beardon. Use this picture as your inspiration for a discussion of "love" in The Odyssey. Think about these questions:
Who is loving who? Is their love true? You can talk about love as shown in the painting, or love as represented in Homer's "The Odyssey". 300 words or more.
THIS IS NOT A DISCUSSION OF LOVE IN YOUR OWN LIFE
THIS IS NOT A DISCUSSION OF LOVE IN YOUR OWN LIFE

Valentine’s Day is a very special time of the year. People give hearts and chocolates away, share love for one another and spread love through the air. The book The Odyssey is filled with love throughout the whole passage. Odysseus shows love to Ithaca, his family, and all of the men that are fighting with him. I believe in this picture that the male is Odysseus showing off his love towards his mother and towards his wife and son who is about to be born. In the background there are ships and the ships represents Odysseus going off unto the Trojan War. Looking closely at this picture I realized that Odysseus is telling someone to hold the ships by putting one of his fingers up. Before he leaves he is getting all of his goodbyes out of the way and all of the last minute things he wanted to say out of the way. The mountain in the background represents the Cyclopes cave and the tests he about to face on his journey.
ReplyDeleteThe love that Odysseus shows towards Ithaca and his family is very strong because the ship in the background is leaving and he is still saying goodbye to his family. His love is also very strong because he is going to fight for all of Ithaca and he knows that he is facing death. If you are willing to die for something you love then you should know that it is true love.
I believe that Odysseus made it through the war and the entire test he faced by using the love he had for Ithaca and his family as shown in this picture. If the soldiers of Ithaca had the same love and compassion for their things back home then most of them that died probably still would be alive.
Who is loving who?
ReplyDeleteIs their love true?
You can talk about love as shown in the painting, or love as represented in Homer's "The Odyssey".
Penelope is the Wife of Odysseus and mother of Telemachus. Penelope spends her days in the palace waiting for the husband who left for Troy twenty years earlier and never returned. Odysseus is the protector of the Odyssey. Odysseus fought among the other Greek heroes at Troy and now struggles to return to his kingdom in Ithaca. Odysseus is the husband of Queen Penelope and the father of Telemachus. Years have passed since the fall of Troy and the hero Odysseus still has yet to return to his kingdom in Ithaca. The other the other people in this picture show all the suitors that want to marry Penelope but she doesn’t want to marry them. The suitors who have overrun Odysseus’s palace and his land continue to prose his wife Penelope. She has remained faithful to Odysseus Prince Telemachus wants desperately to throw them out but does not have the confidence or experience to fight them. One of the suitors plans to assassinate the young boy eliminating the only problem to their dominion over the palace.
In Homer’s “The Odyssey” there is one bond that simply can’t be ignored. Odysseus and his wife have something that is indescribable, the real definition of love. When you can be away from someone for all of ten years and love them the same once they return then it’s real. Penelope never loses hope while her husband is away. She raises a child without the help of the father but still loves him. Another interesting love that I noticed in the story was the one between Circe and Odysseus’ men. This love was a forced love. She put them under a spell and made them love her and her land. This was a mistaken love and if you aren’t aware of the entire story then you would become lost. Circe made Odysseus love her for five of the years in which he was out at sea heading back to Troy. Although under spell to love Circe, he never stopped loving Penelope, the one that was his wife. Another bond that can’t go unnoticed is the love between Odysseus’ and his mother. A mother and son relationship can never be ignored. What makes everything between them more interesting is when she drowns herself to meet him at the “Land of the Dead” while he is on his journey. Anyone that is willing to kill themselves to be with someone sooner than planned truly loves them.
ReplyDeleteThe father of the house defiantly loving his wife. I'm thinkin he threw a valentine party to show how true their love is. They also have a little girl playin with the cat next to her in the room.Everybody having a good time everybody doing there on things just fun!!.All the couples have true love with their mates at the party. It almost look like Odyseus and penelope are Finna shake hand or she may be gettin him up so he can dance with her.Penelope love to nit as shown in the picture above.By the picture it look like all girl are there. But people are dancing and just talkin to their husband and wife.IT looks like their are in a museum because of the picture on the wall and the statue of birds In the picture and and the cat on the floor. But it kinda look like their home cause she sittin down while she is hitting a dress. And Penelope daughter is helping her with the days work. They got checkered floor like a museum perfect for a valentine party to show your wife you really love her.
ReplyDeleteWell I’m doing mine on the picture.
ReplyDeleteThe picture to me looks like a woman and a man are reaching for each other’s love. There in love but there’s something in the middle stopping them from having love. Then he might be leaving but doesn’t wana say goodbye because he will believe that he is coming back. And that’s why there is a white ship in the background. And there other people there like friends or relatives having a little got together for the husband or her lovers leaving. There’s also a little kid who is sad that their father is leaving. The people in the back are being comforting and helpful with the situation. Or they are there to work or help her out while the husband leaves. Then there’s a little gray pet on the floor like a cat. The animal is showing that he doesn’t want his owner to leave. There’s a black bird to represent their love for one another or just a little nice bird flew in threw the open window. And some of the people are also his crew mates telling him it’s time to go say goodbye. But he says there’s no reason because he is positive that he will return home to his wife and child and his village where he lives. And doesn’t want to upset anyone. Then he says he doesn’t want to leave but there depending on him to help their country. And she says be brave and safe. There’s someone in the door like a king or someone telling him it’s time to go and he letting go of his wife hand. Then he tells his kid see you later and he won’t be gone for long. And that he loves them. And if anything happens which it won’t that he will leave everything to his wife and child. And that brown thing in the middle is an obstacle keeping them apart no matter how close they get. And he doesn’t even get to close or he fears that he will tear up and not want to leave his family and then something bad may happen. So he is staying positive. And that’s what I think the picture was talking about referring to love and I threw a little of the odyssey in there.
Well the love between Odysseus and his wife is very but as years came to pass things changed his mother’s love and hope that he would return had grew weary and she ,out of guilt of letting him go killed her self by drowning in a nearby ocean and his wife grew tired and decided that she should find a new suitor to marry but yet and still Odysseus didn’t give up. Even when the enchantress had him in her precious locks he still believed that Ithaca would still be there and so would his wife and son and for not one, or two but five years he has lived with the thought of being able to get back to his truelove snuggling her and being there for her even in Hades [ for some of you people who don’t know Hades is the underworld or in other words hell] and even with the Cyclops unrelenting rage or the foolishness of his own men opening the sac of immeasurably horrid winds and sending them a far ways from Ithaca he never gave up and for him to struggle like that, for him to stay in torture for so many years the only thing I can say he not only crazy for love, [HE’S GOT BALLS] but it teaches us a lesson if you like or in his coco case, love a girl that much, be prepared to do what you don’t want to if a girl wants to a succish movie swallow the urge to vomit and get in that theatre if she really wants something wring out you cash cause it’s not like you cant make more unless you can’t more unless you’re a bum with no job. so that’s my advice take it or lose it and by that I mean whoever you got that’s pretty dang close.
ReplyDeleteWhat is love? It is one of the most difficult questions for the mankind. Centuries have passed by, relationships have bloomed and so has love. But no one can give the proper definition of love. To some Love is friendship set on fire for others Maybe love is like luck. You have to go all the way to find it. No matter how you define it or feel it, love is the eternal truth in the history of mankind.Love is patient, love is kind. It has no envy, nor it boasts itself and it is never proud. It rejoices over the evil and is the truth seeker. Love protects; preserves and hopes for the positive aspect of life. Always stand steadfast in love, not fall into it. It is like the dream of your matter of affection coming true. Love can occur between two or more individuals. It bonds them and connects them in a unified link of trust, intimacy and interdependence. It enhances the relationship and comforts the soul. Love should be experienced and not just felt. The depth of love can not be measured. Look at the relationship between a mother and a child. The mother loves the child unconditionally and it can not be measured at all.A different dimension can be attained between any relationships with the magic of love. Love can be created. You just need to focus on the goodness of the other person. If this can be done easily, then you can also love easily.Depending on context, love can be of different varieties. Romantic love is a deep, intense and unending. It shared on a very intimate and interpersonal and sexual relationship.Be together, share your joy and sorrow, understand each other, provide space to each other, but always be there for each others need. And surely love will blossom to strengthen your relationship with your matter of affection.Thats my defintion of love.Whats your?

Odyssey is in love with his beloved wife. But as he is away in the city of troy there are guys back home telling her and her son that he is dead, lost, or he just never wanted to to come back. although the son doesn’t believe him and is trying to convince his mom to do the same. you kind of know he truly loves her because after his mom kills herself and go to the land of the dead she tells him what’s going on and he immediately tries to get back home. their love is is very strong passionate, and caring all at the same time. I think once you read this story and understand the text you will see or feel some of love they have for each other. although she loves him truly she excepts gifts from the other men that are saying her husband is dead. even though he isn’t. to be honest i dont think she knows what to believe i mean it has been what 10 years since she saw him. That is a long time. as he is on his journey he has gods and goddess to help him along the way. But all he can think about is his wife and getting back home to her and his son. The men there are trying to convince his wife that Odysseus is dead and never coming back so that she can remarry. Well remarry one of them. That’s why they send her gifts and stuff. i think as long as the son believes that his dad is still out there and is trying to get home to them he could give the mother some encourage ment to stay Odysseus wife and not fall for the the other men. He knows that his father still loves and care for him and his mother. Cause if he didn’t Odysseus wouldn’t be trying to get home. The End
ReplyDeleteIn this picture i see different people that represent a different type of love . But i see two people that look as if they are a couple, the look as if they are happily in love together and are dependent upon each other for affection, sympathy , and empathy. Its The woman that looks like she has on a blue dress maybe with the grey headscarf rapped on her head and the man with the grey dashiki, the blue shoes, and they white and blue head cover. This man and woman look like they are in love because it looks like the man is just about too grab the woman by her hand and maybe since there is a boat in the background they are about too set sail and the caption is at the door with the burgundy cape on and the hat on top of his head. Their love may look as if it is true love but we will never know because it looks as if the picture isn't explaining their love fully , but then again their position seems as if they really have something going on with each other. The Man with the grey on could maybe be a king of his time and the woman may be his queen only saying because of their head wear and they look as if they are in love with one another. The other people may just be there to support their love with each other and they can be representing different types of love that both the man and woman have for each other. The love is described by the position of each and every persona and item like the cat the bird and even the rock sitting back out of the window by the sail boat. But to me this looks like this is a type of romance love that they have going on in the photo but its hard to tell.
ReplyDeleteThere are allot of different types of love. the love for material things, the love for another person,Etc. I think the both of the loves i mentioned appear in the photo above. But in the Odyssey the only love i see is between Odysseus and Penelope, Odysseus and his crew, some of the gods and Odysseus, and Odysseus and his son. there is a really strong love between Odysseus and Penelope since she waited for him to come back from the war for so long. It makes sense that she moved on because she waited ten years and everyone else had already returned from the war. I don't think she will go back with him when he finally returns home. Odysseus's may have opened the bag of wind with out his consent but i think they still love him. when he went to the land of the dead to talk to tiereis all of his crew members showed how much they love their captain. If he had not come back from his meeting they would have been devastated and would've probably never made their way back to Ithaca. If you didn't know Ithaca is that place were every body is trying to get in life, such as success. Back on subject his crew loves him. Half of the gods in the Odyssey like Odysseus they give him help in allot of ways. like that dude giving the bag of wind,or the goddess that turns people into animals giving him food and telling him where to go and Hermes giving him the plant to eat so he wouldn't turn into an animal. Speaking of her she Ended up falling in love with Odysseus because he didn't turn into an animal Like the rest of his crew. He Made love to her and he realized he had been there for five years. Odysseus and his son love each other because his son still believes he is still alive. That is all of the Love in the story that I noticed. So yeah.
ReplyDeleteThere's a lot of love going on in the Odyssey. Heck Odysseus makes love to many women other than his wife! Odysseus still really loves his wife though. He even had a kid with her.In my personal opinion, Odysseus' wife love him more than he loves her. She seems like she wouldn't dare have an affair. She'd probably die for him, and he'd do the same... I think. It's pretty confusing, but Odysseus' son's love definitley isn't. Odysseus' son loves his dad with all his heart and he's never even met the guy! Odysseus himself is completely in love with Ithica. He fights for Ithica and it's great citizens all the time. When, in the story, he basically gets stuck and can't get back to Ithica, He cries his eyes out!
ReplyDeleteLove is an interesting word. The definition of love is a tender compassionate affection for someone. I think there was a few times in this story when I experienced love. To start off I think love was shown in this story when Penelope gave birth to Odysseus son. If you watch the movie Odysseus came running to his son’s birth. I also saw love between Odysseus and his wife. Before he left for troy he hugged and kissed his wife goodbye and went his way. I think they also showed love with their dedication to each other, their power to stay together through times of happiness and times of sad, and their genuine to survive the test of time. I think he also showed love when he was a prisoner of calypso. She tried to bribe him of immortality and instead of staying with her he went home to his true love Penelope. Because of her he went through many trails just to be back home with her. His son showed love by going out to look for Odysseus. I think calypso shows a lot of love towards Odysseus because when he tries to leave she keeps him as a prisoner.
ReplyDeleteLove is quite confusing, especially in the Odyssey. Odyseus has love for his shipmates, his land, his son and his wife. He loves his men because they never doubt him and he never doubts them. He trusts them and never would hurt them. He shows love for them when the lady Circe turns his men into pigs and monkeys and lions. He shows love to his son by promising him the kingdom in the beginning. He shows love for homeland because he fights for them from the beginning to the end. HIs love for his wife has become tested, but her love for him never fails. She loves him throuh the men fighting for her, from his mother drowning herself because of heavy burdens. She sticks by him making sure that everyone knows he will return and make her his again. Odyseus loves his wife because every time he sleeps with another he only thinks of her. He loves her, but his loyalty to her is not as strong considering that he meets a couple of women every year and she sees dudes everyday. She ultimately has more love for him than he has for her.
ReplyDeleteThe people Odysseus seems to love is his Mother Anticlea, Telemachus, and his town and mate. The reason I say he loves his town because no one would ever risk their life to go war. Although he is crowned and just stepping up for what you have to do. His faithful wife Penelope. She raised their son Telemachus to an Adult. Kept faith in their relationship and had hope. His son Telemachus you can tell in the reactions he makes to him. Odysseus seems to love his mother very much. She died on grief because of her son Odysseus had been away for so long. Commiting suicide by drowning herself in the ocean. Odysseus mothers and wife both got touched when he was close to arriving the first time before being blown away into sea. What does that tell you? His crew mates and that's a fact. He helped provide them with food and a place to sleep. He's looked out for everyone and has been a great leader. Forgives and doesn't go around upset all because of his noisy crew members. Forgave and put to the past. I haven’t read past on because I was absent the last three days of school last week. Odysseus son Telemachus he wanted to be just like him. Suppose to be trained instead of being a child humiliating to Telemachus but at that time there wasn’t any room for fear. Raised as a great warrior ready to stand for his and lead their area. I’m pretty sure he has some love for the gods that helped or tried (before crew members violated ) . The gods admired his ways. Odysseus had great strength, a word of glory, and power. His quick brilliant ideas that’s when great for him in horrible situations. Like the god of winds said, “ There’s no leader like you. “ I’m not sure if that was his exact words from what I can remember.

ReplyDeleteThe word love. The word love is passionate. When some tells you that they love you you expect for them to mean it but sometimes they just say it because it sounds good. In the picture above Odyseus loves his wife because every time he sleeps with another he only thinks of her. He loves her, but his loyalty to her is not as strong considering that he meets a couple of women evry now and thenHe fights for Ithica and it's great citizens all the time. When, in the story, he basically gets stuck a No matter how you define it or feel it, love is the eternal truth in the history of mankind.Love is patient, love is kind. It has no envy, nor it boasts itself and it is never proud. It rejoices over the evil and is the truth seeker. once he realizes can't get back to Ithica, He cries his eyes out! That tells you the he odysseus is in love. In the picture it is also confusing because it alot of pepole in it so it is kind of hard to tell who is loving who or who really wants who. One thing that I can tell is that there little kid who is sad that his father is leaving his leaving him. With that being said i dont think i can tell you or find anything else in this picture so i am done.

In the Odyssey there is a lot of war and violence, but there is also a lot of love. There is love in a family, like Odysseus and Penelope and Telemachus, love between lovers and husbands and wives, like with Penelope and Odysseus, one-sided love like the love that Calypso and Odysseus had where the goddess Calypso tried to keep Odysseus with her on her island, even with promises of riches and immortality Odysseus, who was true to his love, did not budge; even with Penelope and her suitors , even they could have provided riches and a father figure in Telemachus’ life. In Rosmare Beardon’s picture I don’t really see what that is depicting or how it pertains to love. But I will give it my best shot. In this picture it looks like a weaver is having a party or a gathering and it looks like a man is standing and talking to the weaver with his wife standing next to him. The woman looks like she is pregnant. Already, right there if that woman is his wife then that would make their love romantic and family centered. Then when the son or daughter is born that makes the love whole and pure, it creates bond between father and son or father and daughter. Then there is also the bond between the mother and son or the mother and daughter. Also the child who is sitting next to the weaver might be the weaver’s son or daughter of the weaver’s apprentice. If the child is the weaver’s child than that is another example of family love. Even if the child is an apprentice for him then there is still that bond between teacher and student. There may even be a relationship between the weaver and the traveler.
ReplyDeleteLove is something we can’t explain. It describes how we feel. Love is basely like a chemical rush we can’t control, we can only learn to deal with it. Love is four letter words that describe everything we want to tell a person but cant. Love can’t be broken or destroyed. When I think of the word love, I see two hearts connecting or when I see this picture I see a man and a woman meeting each other for destiny. Love basically is when two people feel very strong towards each other. Love is like even thought you put that person through everything or when that person put you through everything, your still there for that person no matter what. Love is a distance kind of thing; it can never be broken unless its fake loves.
ReplyDeleteIn this picture, love can just mean a simple touch or a reach out of the hand. It looks like the picture in that picture are throwing a party, and celebrating that they found they soul mate. This picture and love can mean a lot. It can mean five hundreds words or maybe one. This picture can mean how "The Odysseus" and his wife are reunited and or it could mean how Odysseus and his wife are reunited and throwing a party.
I the drawing that i see above it shows alot of love. People define there own love but what i think love is in this picture is first the man and the women that have there arms out reaching for each other like there wanting to hug each other shows alot of love. Some more things in the pictrue that show love is the other people in the background they also have there arms out to as if they want to hug and greet someone that they havent seen in awhile. they all look as if they were greeting the girl and its was someone close to them that they really love and they havent seen in a while and they are happy that she is back. Lastly i see the little child playing with his toys. and to me where there are children there is love. and thats all the love that i see.

ReplyDeleteThe people odysseus seems to have a catch on is very different and it can only be stated as very strange. But when he has to leave them they help him anyway possible and there love gets stranger as he leave. It can only mean one thing love is somewhere and for anybody. Like haveing lots and lots of devoted people to single you out and realize that your the only person that they want and you have know that not only will it someday help you but you can always count on whats comeing in the future. Meaning the picture up there is very unlikely taking someone for their beauty or just take there hand in marriage. That can only set love ashore once more giving everyone something to look forward when they find love true love is somewhere and anywhere for those who is looking for it. I really think that we have once had something to look forward to and love is just a picture away and love is found everywhere even when you don't want it. That piwreally just inspired me to just look everywhere and anywhere.
