Fight The Power

Much non-fiction writing is aimed at speaking out against a force of opposition.  Take a look at Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter From Birmingham Jail" and you will see exactly how non-fiction writing fights the powers that be.

Your life is surrounded by forces that push and pull you in different directions.  Using a 5 paragraph Schaffer Model you will explore the powers that you fight.

For the next five days of class we will build towards this essay piece by piece.  Don't rush ahead until you know where you are going.

  1. Selling product at school is against school policy. Selling product at school gives students money that can be used to fill their stomachs at lunch or fill their pockets to supply thier families needs. The well being of the students should be the first concern of the administration. Students aren't selling things that are innapropriate to other students. It is a snack for in between classes. These snacks are to keep students focused on the work and not counting the hours and minutes until lunch.

Snacks are goin to increase the amount of money students spend at lunch. If students have money to buy lunch, and are truly hungry, they will buy a lunch. The lunch menu items will continue to be just as high and most lunches will end up being three to five dollars. If students that have free lunch sell items and buy the three to five dollar lunch you are getting a higher profit. Students that buy from a supplier will think about how much there lunch costs before they buy anything. This logic still gives you the amount of money need and gives you some to splurge with.

By students selling you can get an idea of what students like to eat, how much it costs, and how much they're willing to pay for it. Many corporate companies survey and observe the transactions that have been made and produced more of that product. When the students sell things like Big Texas, Skittles, and chips you get a free look at their playing hand in terms of how much it costs and how much they'll pay for it. This strategy will neutralize the young euntreprenuers' business plan and they will soon run out of money and business.

When it comes to selling things there can be stipulations. If you set ground rules and stand firm they won't have any chance of breezing past any rules. The students won't be able to sell if they don't have at leats a 2.5 avg or they can't miss more than 2 days of school and only 2 tardies for school or calss.

By letting students sell it will increase attendance. Statistics show that students only come to school for a reason. Let that reason be they make money. If a student has to meet a certain standard to sell and then makes that type of money they'll come to school more often and won't be skipping classes.

  2. I fight against many things as a teen. The main thing that is most common for teens is peer pressure. When a lot of people hear peer pressure they think drug use straight away. It can also cause trouble at school. It can even get you into trouble at home.

Peer pressure involving drug use is the one I witness weekly. When I'm around my friends they're usually rolling blunts or smoking blunts. Most of the time they're doing both. I've never even tried smoking a blunt in my life, and my friends ask if I want to all the time. It's all they talk about.

I've got in trouble at school numerous times from peer pressure. In seventh grade I got written up all the time. My friends would tell me to yell out inappropriate things during class and I would do so. I got so use to it that I started doing it of my own free will.

I get in trouble a lot at home now a days. My friends tell me stories about how they disrespect their parents a lot. Then they'll tell me to do the same. They might say "if she tell you no, just go for it, it'll be okay." They usually say "don't let them treat you like that."

Now as you can see peer pressure has affected me a lot in my life. It has been tough trying not to hit a blunt. Now I'm not only denying smoking, but everything they tell me to do that I know is wrong. Every teen should be fighting against negative peer pressure.
